If a band can get noticed singing songs about sexy geometry, then anyone can. It’s not every day you hear a radio song with a lyric such as, “ Triangles are my favorite shape/ Three points where two lines meet.” Alt-J prove that any list of rules for success in today’s music business are bogus.
“Tessellate,” the group’s lead single, gets heavy airplay on both sides of the Atlantic despite, or perhaps partially because of, its blatant geekiness. Here we have one of 2012’s most unlikely music stories: a quirky Cambridge-based quartet named after a Mac keyboard command reaches the top 20 in the UK with a record that wallows in the liminal state between folk and electronica, straddling the boundaries of Thom Yorke’s The Eraser and Fleet Foxes’ Helplessness Blues.
